Salem, WV, was founded as “New Salem” in 1790 by 40 Seventh Day Baptist families from New Jersey. Chartered in 1794, its first trustees included names like Lippincott, Maxson, and Davis. The name officially changed to “Salem” in 1884. Salem College, originally Salem Academy, was established in 1888, following an earlier, short-lived school founded in 1870.
